Police confiscate shotgun at Gifford Street High School

Elgin police are crediting a student with calling attention to the presence of a gun brought to a high school Thursday.

As a result of that student's vigilance, police said the weapon was detected and a 15-year-old student was taken into custody.

At 11:30 a.m. Elgin police received a tip that a student brought a weapon to Gifford Street High School, 46 S. Gifford, Elgin.

Police said the Elgin Police School Resource Officer immediately worked with school and district administrators to secure the students and the school.

School administrators, with the support of police, then conducted a comprehensive search of the school, including lockers and the students themselves.

The search uncovered an unloaded shotgun in the student's locker. Police said no ammunition was found.

The student, a resident of Streamwood, was taken to the Elgin Police Department for further investigation.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been filed.

“I am proud of the student who brought this information forward. It is this type of brave action that leads to a safer community” said Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda.
