Elgin apartment building’s roof burns

A roof of an Elgin apartment building started on fire Monday, but ultimately none of the tenants was displaced. Elgin firefighters responded to the blaze at 7:47 p.m. at the nine-unit building on the 400 block of Division Street.

“We had to tear open the roof in the end of the building,” said Elgin Capt. Dick Cummings. “The fire never got into the building itself. It was just the top part of the roof.”

Fire officials are still investigating the blaze but say workers made repairs to the roof Monday that may be related to the fire.
