Des Plaines History Center presents portrayal of Harriet Tubman

On Saturday, March 2, the Des Plaines History Center will present “A Portrayal of Harriet Tubman” by Pamela J. Welcome at the Prairie Lakes Community Center Theater in Des Plaines.

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in 1849, and returned to Maryland to free others along the Underground Railroad. Later, during the Civil War she served as a cook, nurse, scout, and spy for the Union forces and later became active in efforts for women’s suffrage. Watch this onstage performance by Pamela Welcome as she brings the passion and determination of Harriet Tubman to life.

This educational program and fundraiser, featured during Woman’s History Month, provides audience members with an opportunity to learn about the life of a woman, who rose above dire circumstances and the oppression of slavery, to make a better life for herself, for her family and for others. Educational materials about Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad and the Civil War era will be available in the lobby before and after the performance.

The program will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Prairie Lakes Community Center Theater, 515 E. Thacker St., Des Plaines. Tickets may be ordered in advance or purchased at the theater the day of the program. Tickets for adults are $10 each, or $15 for two; tickets for children are $5 each.

To order tickets in advance, call (847) 391-5399 or stop in at the Des Plaines History Center during open hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Proceeds will help support the Des Plaines History Center.

The program’s creator and performer, Pamela Welcome, holds a bachelor of arts degree in acting and directing from Northern Illinois University. She has performed in many diverse theatrical productions. She currently performs Black Women in History — featuring Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and a World War II riveter/welder.
