Freezing drizzle continues, but no more snow expected

A light, freezing drizzle is expected to continue for the next few hours, but no more snow is anticipated this weekend, a spokesman for the National Weather Service said Friday afternoon.

“We are not looking for any real accumulation of anything,” said meteorologist Gino Izzi.

A National Weather Service winter weather advisory has been canceled, he said.

Overnight, the region received between 2 and 4 inches of snow accumulating on the ground, and close to 5 inches in some isolated spots near the Wisconsin border, Izzi said.

There will be no snow on Saturday.

Weather spotters said 2.8-inches of snow is reported on the ground in Elgin, while 3.5-inches of snow has been recorded in Lake Villa, according to the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network which measures snow and rain totals.

Official totals show that 2.7-inches of snow was reported on the ground at O’Hare International Airport.

About a dozen spinouts have been recorded across the area due to the snow. However, no major accidents have been reported.

Numerous schools — like schools in Algonquin, Waukegan, Carpentersville and Dundee — area have already shut down due to the potential snow. Those closings can be found online at the Emergency Closing Center.

Flightview is reporting only minor delays and cancellations at O’Hare this morning.
