Police: Teacher caught smoking pot under bleachers free on bond
A Warren Township High School special education teacher is free on bond after being arrested and charged Saturday in Antioch with smoking marijuana under the bleachers at a high school wrestling tournament, officials said.
Antioch Police Chief Craig Somerville said an off-duty officer found Peter Mulloy, 50, of the 21000 block of Michelle Lane in Antioch, smoking weed in the Antioch High School gym during an IHSA sectional wrestling tournament.
While watching the event, the officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from below the bleachers, Somerville said. The officer confronted Mulloy before calling Antioch Police and having Mulloy arrested, Somerville said.
Mulloy was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug equipment. He was freed on $120 bond Saturday with an unknown court date.
District 121 Interim Superintendent Mary Perry Bates said Mulloy has been a teacher at Warren Township High School since 2007, and was at the wrestling tournament as a supporter, not as a coach with the wrestling team.
Because it was a personnel matter, Bates said, she could not disclose whether Mulloy had been suspended from the high school. However, she said, “we are managing the situation according to our board policy,” and Mulloy was not working at the high school on Thursday.
She said the Warren Township board of education has been apprised of the situation.
