Naperville man guilty in speeding-for-sex case

The waiting is the hardest part, according to rock singer Tom Petty, and apparently Zachary Ramirez just couldn’t do it.

The 21-year-old Naperville man — who told police he was driving 111 mph because he couldn’t wait to have sex — pleaded guilty Thursday to reckless driving and marijuana possession.

DuPage County Judge Jane Mitton placed Ramirez on 18 months of court supervision and sentenced him to five days in the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program. As part of the plea agreement, Ramirez must undergo random drug tests, Assistant State’s Attorney Kasia Malkinska said.

Police clocked Ramirez driving more than 100 mph in a 45-mph zone shortly after 2 a.m. April 21 on Naperville’s south side.

His black Honda Prelude was first spotted racing north on Plainfield-Naperville Road in the area of the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve. He then ran a red light at 75th Street and blew past a stop sign at River Road and Oswego Street.

When stopped and questioned, Ramirez said he was in a hurry to go have sex with a girl he liked, according to police. Officers searched his car and found a small amount of marijuana.

Ramirez, of the 1400 block of Fairway Drive, had been scheduled for a jury trial Thursday when he pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charges.

Defense attorney Dominick Dolci said his client can avoid a conviction if he completes court supervision. Prosecutors dropped a speeding charge that could have resulted in Ramirez’s license being suspended.

“He’s a young man, and I think he learned his lesson,” Dolci said. “Other than the statement (to police), there was nothing out of the ordinary. This is something that happens every day.”

Ramirez could not be reached for comment.
