Northwest Suburban Bar Association scholarship applications due March 15

Law students have until March 15, to apply for financial help to fund their legal education.

Students currently enrolled in law school may apply for the Honorable Timothy C. Evans Scholarship, sponsored by the Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation.

The scholarship is named for Timothy C. Evans, chief judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Applicants must live in Illinois, in the Northern District, Eastern Division (which includes Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, LaSalle, Lake and Will counties), and must currently attend an accredited Illinois law school. Factors that will be considered in awarding the scholarship include scholastic achievement, involvement in school and extracurricular activities, plus financial need.

Evans has spent much of his professional life in public service. He graduated from The John Marshall Law School in 1969, and that year was appointed assistant corporation counsel in the city of Chicago’s Law Department. He later became deputy commissioner of the Department of Investigations. He was elected to the Chicago City Council in 1973, and represented the 4th Ward for 18 years, while also maintaining a private law practice. He has been a member of the Cook County judiciary since being elected a circuit judge in 1992.

As chief judge he has spearheaded safe-haven programs for children of parents or guardians attending court and has championed expanding opportunities for women and minorities at the court’s executive management level. He also led the effort to open the domestic violence courthouse in Chicago.

The Foundation oversees the scholarship and is committed to public service. “The Foundation is honored to be able to help the next generation of lawyers.”

Scholarship recipients will be honored at the NWSBA Judges’ Night April 18.
