Three charged in BB gun incident near Sugar Grove

Three people were charged with reckless conduct Monday after police say they pulled up alongside a vehicle near Sugar Grove and shot at it with a BB gun that resembled a real pistol.

Police said the victims were not injured, but they followed the vehicle from the intersection of Route 30 and Route 47 near Sugar Grove for more than 15 minutes while reporting their location to Kane County sheriff’s officers.

Police officers caught up with the suspects at 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Mill Creek Drive and Fabyan Parkway in an unincorporated area near Geneva.

“The BB gun was an extremely close replica of a firearm. It has an orange tip, but you can barely see it,” Lt. Patrick Gengler said. “At first (the victims) weren’t sure ... that it was a BB gun, but it was pretty scary for them.”

Hector Rubio, 18, of the 200 block of Bluegrass Parkway in Oswego; Michael Thompson, 20, of the 0-99 block of Oakwood Drive in Oswego; and Elle Fowler, 18, of the 3100 block of Thunderbird Court in Aurora were charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct

The trio confessed to officers that they had thrown the BB gun out the window before being stopped by police, and officers quickly recovered it, police said.

Because of the proximity to Fabyan Elementary, the school was put on lockdown until the situation was resolved.

It was unfortunate timing for that neighborhood — located close to Mill Creek Elementary — where an altercation with a parent last week led the Kane County sheriff’s office to station officers at both schools for a couple of days last week.

“The neighborhood was still on edge after that situation. Most of the kids were out of Fabyan Elementary, but we had to put that school on lockdown,” Gengler said. “For a few minutes there, it made people kind of uncomfortable wondering what’s going on.”

Rubio, Thompson and Fowler each posted $100 bond.
