Warren-Newport Library celebrates 40 years
Forty years ago, on Jan. 10, 1973, civic-minded volunteers founded the Warren-Newport Public Library District in Gurnee.
The community is invited to celebrate WNPL’s ruby anniversary Sunday, Jan. 20, with an afternoon of reunions, reflections and refreshments. The library is at 224 North O’Plaine Road, Gurnee.
The celebration kicks off with a “homecoming” in the large meeting room at 2 p.m., including remarks by the library board president and executive director. Families are invited to take a photograph with Ruby the horse and embark on a treasure hunt to discover the gem of the community.
Adults will want to brush up on their ’70s trivia to land a prize on the wheel, and kids will be challenged to answer the question “Where’s Ruby?” starting Jan. 12. The location will change weekly.
The afternoon is capped by light refreshments and gifts (while supplies last), winding to a close at 4 p.m. Registration is not required.
The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 67,000 within a 55-square mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek, and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa, Libertyville and Waukegan.
