Eagle Scout earns natural resource conservation service honor
Eagle Scout, Alex Wziontka, 18, was a recipient of the BSA William T. Hornady Badge for distinguished service in natural resource conservation.
The badge is one of three awards available: Badge, Bronze Medal and Silver Medal. The Hornaday awards are earned via rank advancement, earning merit badges and planning and carrying out least one service project related to natural resource conservation.
Wziontka’s Eagle project qualified in the category of energy conservation. He led fellow scouts in building solar cooking ovens which were sent to the earthquake victims in Haiti.
The recipients of the award form an elite group. There were 1,079,418 Boy Scouts in 2011. Of that number only 132 scouts earned a Hornaday Award, 122 earned the Badge. In comparison, 51,473 earned Eagle Scout.
Wziontka is the first member of Troop 140 to earn the award, and only the second scout in the Northwest Suburban Council. He is a 2012 graduate of Buffalo Grove High School and is currently a freshman at Michigan State University.
