2 more students surrender in NIU hazing death
DEKALB, Ill. — Two more fraternity members charged with hazing after a pledge died following a night a heavy drinking have surrendered to police.
Twenty-two members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity were charged following an investigation into the Nov. 2 death of 19-year-old David Bogenberger of Palatine.
DeKalb police said the Northern Illinois University freshman was found unresponsive after a party for pledges. They said Bogenberger and others drank large quantities of liquor over a two-hour period.
The coroner ruled Bogenberger's cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia, with alcohol intoxication as a contributing cause.
DeKalb police Lt. Jason Leverton said 16 of those charged have now turned themselves in, posted bond and been released.
He said others left the state for holiday break but have said they will surrender when they return.
