Marathon shuts Louisiana refinery unit after leak

Marathon Petroleum Corp. shut a unit at its 460,000-barrel-a-day Garyville refinery in Louisiana after a leak discharged gas oil that may contain hydrogen sulphide gas, according to a government filing.

A leak developed in one of the refinery’s operating units and was discovered at 5:55 p.m. local time Dec. 15, the filing with the U.S. National Response Center showed. The amount of gas released with the fuel was unknown, according to the filing.

U.S. refineries must notify the National Response Center if they release hazardous substances in excess of reportable quantities, according to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, known as Superfund.
