South Elgin man threatened with BB gun, shoes stolen

A 26-year-old South Elgin man was held for more than an hour in his own home by a man with a realistic looking BB gun who sprayed lighter fluid on him and took his clothes and shoes, according to police and court records.

Carliss D. Henderson, 25, of the 700 block of West Highland Avenue, Elgin, is charged with felony home invasion, two counts of armed robbery, unlawful restraint, criminal damage to property and resisting arrest, according to police and court records.

Henderson was arrested in Elgin Saturday night after an incident that South Elgin police say began about 1 p.m. when he kicked down the door of a residence in the 400 block of Lowell Drive, and held the victim using a BB gun and a golf club from inside the residence, South Elgin Detective Sgt. Mike Doty said.

Doty said Henderson also sprayed lighter fluid on the victim, who was an acquaintance of Henderson’s. The victim feared he was going to be shot, beaten or lit on fire.

“Initially, the victim thought it was a real gun, but we found out it was a BB gun,” said Doty, who added the victim was not injured in the ordeal, which lasted more than an hour.

Doty said Henderson stole some clothing items. Court records charge him with stealing shoes.

Henderson fled the scene, but was picked up at about 8 p.m. by Elgin police for an “individual acting strangely,” South Elgin police said.

Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault could not immediately specify what Henderson was doing that night.

If convicted Henderson faces between six and 30 years in prison on the most serious charges, and he was being held on $751,000 bail, meaning he must post $75,100 to be free while the case is pending. He is due in court Dec. 21.

According to court records, he was arrested in March 2006 on misdemeanor domestic battery charges and was fined $550 and given 12 months supervision.
