Hoffman Estates home for disabled adults gets renovations

A home for disabled adults in Hoffman Estates has a new kitchen, thanks to the generosity of the Home Depot and Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit organization that provides home rehabilitation to people in need.

Kathy Scheuing, volunteer services coordinator for Clearbrook, an Arlington Heights-based provider of services and support to children and adults with disabilities, said Rebuilding Together reached out to Clearbrook and asked if there were any projects the agency needed help with.

Clearbrook employees suggested the group home it owns on Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates where six disabled men live. But when Rebuilding Together took a look at what needed to be done, employees said they didn’t have the resources to do the job, Scheuing said.

Three days later, Rebuilding Together was contacted by a representative of Home Depot, who said the company also was looking for a local project to do, Scheuing said. It was perfect timing.

Last Tuesday, a Rebuilding Together crew demolished the kitchen in the home, and on Wednesday, a volunteer Home Depot crew completed the renovation with supplies donated by the store. The crew replaced cabinets, installed a new garbage disposal, put in an updated sink and countertops, and painted the walls.

Scheuing said she and the residents are happy with the end result. She added that Clearbrook is very appreciative of the work because otherwise it would have taken a much longer time for the organization to come up with the money to fund the renovations.
