On Oct. 27, Des Plaines Toastmasters Club #1645/30 was awarded the Select Distinguished Award and several individual achievements for the 2011-2012 Toastmaster year.

The Select Distinguished Award trophy was handed to Des Plaines Toastmaster Club President Kevin Chapman of Mount Prospect at the Toastmasters District 30 Fall conference, held at the Holiday Inn in Willow Brook.

Only 32 of the 234 Toastmaster clubs in the greater Chicago area earned this award during the 2011-2012 year.

“This is the first time our club has achieved this level of success in its 57 years,” said Chapman. “It truly was a group effort.”

The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

Des Plaines Toastmasters meet at 7 p.m., on the first and third Monday of the month, at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood St. The next meeting will be held Monday, Nov. 19. Walk-ins are welcome. For information, visit 1645.toastmastersclubs.org.
