Nomination forms available for District 304 board

Nominating petition forms for the April 9, 2013, school board election in Geneva Community Unit School District 304 are now available online at www.geneva304.org/board_of_education/2013_elections.asp.

People interested in running for the Geneva Board of Education also may obtain forms at the School District’s Central Office, 227 N. Fourth St., between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any business day.

A school board candidate’s petition must be filed in the same office no earlier than 7:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, and no later than 5 p.m. p.m. Monday, Dec. 24. Nominating papers may be filed by the candidate in person, by mail, or by an agent. Candidates’ names will appear on the election ballot in the order in which their nominating papers are received.

Four seats on the seven-member Geneva Board of Education will be filled through this electoral process. Candidates elected will serve 4-year terms expiring in April 2017.

To be eligible to serve, a school board member must be, on the date of election, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of the state of Illinois and of the school district for at least one year immediately preceding the election.

Elections are nonpartisan and board candidates do not indicate a political party affiliation. Candidates should be aware of financial conflict-of-interests limitations set forth in state law.

Nominating papers consist of the following:

Ÿ Nominating petitions signed by at least 50 registered voters residing within Geneva School District. Petitions must be securely bound together with pages numbered consecutively, and each page must carry the notarized signature of the petition circulator.

Ÿ Statement of candidacy, which includes a request that the candidate’s name be placed on the official ballot, the address of the candidate, the office sought, and a statement that the candidate is qualified for the office and has filed (or will file before the close of the petition filing period) a statement of economic interests, as required by the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act.

Ÿ A receipt from the Kane County Clerk showing that the candidate has filed the Statement of Economic Interests as noted above.

Ÿ A loyalty oath, which is optional. A candidate may choose to file it or not.

Important dates for the candidates are:

Ÿ Monday, Dec. 17, the first day candidates may file nominating papers with the Board Secretary for the April 9, 2013, school board election. Office opens at 7:30 a.m. and will close at 4 p.m. each day, except on the last day for filing, Monday, Dec. 24, when the office will remain open until 5 p.m., as required by law.

Ÿ Wednesday, Dec. 19, the lottery to determine the ballot position for candidates who filed nominating papers simultaneously on the first day of filing will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. in the Geneva School District’s Central Office, 227 N. Fourth St., Geneva. The lottery is open to the public.

Ÿ Monday, Dec. 24, the last day candidates may file nominating papers with the Board Secretary. Office remains open until 5 p.m. Also, last day for candidates to file receipt for Statement of Economic Interests to accompany nominating papers.

Ÿ Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, the last day to file objections to the nominating papers of candidates who have filed for the April 9, 2013, school board election.

Ÿ Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, the last day candidate may file notarized papers withdrawing nomination.
