Carpentersville Fire Dept. supports breast cancer patients
A fundraiser that the Carpentersville Fire Department recently held to help breast cancer patients at two local hospitals raised $1,600.
The fire department sold pink T-shirts for several days in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign was dubbed “Wear Pink.”
Fire Chief John Schuldt said the department gave $800 each to Sherman and Provena St. Joseph hospitals in Elgin to help their breast cancer patients.
The village made an official presentation to both hospitals last week.
“It’s nice that the village can contribute any amount to the cause because these people are going through life-changing events,” Schuldt said. “And the village of Carpentersville and employees bought a pink shirt and can thank themselves.”
KofC kudos: The Knights of Columbus Council at St. Mary’s Catholic Church has won the Spirit of Illinois gold award from the Knights of Columbus’ Illinois State Council.
The annual award program recognizes councils for excellence, for sponsoring programs that serve the church, community, families, youth and council members.
The 250-member council at St. Mary’s has been involved in a host of activities all year.
Among them are: donating money to support Catholic youth in Chicago, donating to and sorting presents for the Christmas Giving Tree parish program for the needy, sponsoring four blood drives a year that collected nearly 400 pints of blood, organizing the church’s annual parish picnic, participating in Huntley’s Adopt-a-Highway program and repairing the gates to St. Mary’s Cemetery.
It marks the first time the council has earned the gold award from the state group. Last year, it received a bronze award.
“We want people to know what we’re doing — we’re very proud of it and we want to continue to do some more,” said Frank Rzeszutko, the council’s spokesman.
“We were surprised that we got that level. We felt ... all the things we did we qualified for at least an honorable mention or the bronze award again.”
The Knights of Columbus is an all male, fraternal service organization in the Catholic Church that stands for charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. The group has been around since 1882 and is most visible when it mounts an honor guard at funerals and when it escorts visiting church dignitaries.
“That’s what people see,” Rzeszutko said. “What they don’t see is our support for the poor, our support for the needy, our support for the people that are hurting.”
Electronics recycling: Are you tired of those old, unused electronics clogging up valuable space in your home? If so, Huntley residents are invited to take part in an upcoming electronics recycling event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the village’s municipal complex, 10987 Main St.
Among the items accepted are: Christmas lights, copy machines, computers, cellular phones, video and cassette tapes.
