Des Plaines Salutes Its Vets

Veteran’s Day was a special event in the City of Des Plaines, as the public and members of American Legion Post #36 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2992 gathered at 1 PM, Sunday, November 11, 2012, at the Lake Park Veterans Memorial Pavilion, Lee Street and Touhy Avenue, to acknowledge all those who serve, or served, in the military. The featured guest speaker was Marine Major Aaron Lloyd who commented about the quality of men and women involved in military service. Mayor Martin J. Moylan addressed the group quoting from the national proclamation and President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. An Invocation was presented by Reverend Dr. William Grice, dignitaries were introduced by Senior Vice Commander Jim Ryland, a dialogue presentation was presented by VFW Commander Michael Lake and American Legion Commander Don Meseth and Mr. Simon Bray, former Army Sergeant and member of the Bethesda Worship Center led the closing prayer. During the course of the ceremony members of the American Legion and VFW were introduced and gave a synopsis of their military experience. Flags from each branch of service were raised. Maine West High School Students assisted. The final musical number, “God Bless America,” was sung by Commander Don Meseth who sings with the New Tradition, International Barbershop Harmony Chorus.
