Aurora man with 478 birds faces animal hoarding charge
The Aurora man whose home was filled with 478 birds — 120 of them dead — has been charged with misdemeanor companion animal hoarding, authorities said Tuesday.
David Skeberdis, 57, of the 200 block of Shadybrook Lane, was charged Monday night by the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office and ordered to appear in court Dec. 4, according to Aurora police.
If found guilty, Skeberdis could face six months in county jail, up to 24 months probation and $1,500 in fines. He also could be ordered to undergo psychological and psychiatric evaluation and treatment and may be forbidden from possessing animals.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals encouraged the city to seek charges against Skeberdis, saying he needs court-ordered treatment to ensure he does not continue to mistreat animals.
The charges come after Aurora last month began investigating a report of multiple birds visible in Skeberdis’ home. Along with 478 birds, authorities said the home contained mounds of garbage, bird feces and bird seed, and had potentially hazardous mold counts.
The property was deemed a nuisance for violations of property maintenance codes relating to animals. Authorities said an attorney Skeberdis hired contacted the city Nov. 1 and indicated Skeberdis would not comply with inspections of his home, scheduled for Nov. 2 and Nov. 7, so the city is considering legal action.
