Register and vote in historic election

This election matters because candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney differ sharply whether government should take an active role to stimulate the economy, to expand health care coverage, to protect consumer safety and worker rights and the environment.

This election matters because Americans come together once every four years to choose a president and other candidates who set a tone and direction for the country.

The election on Nov. 6, 2012, is of historic importance, as it was in 2008. Voters face critical issues, we are at a crossroads.

In November 2008, voter turnout was 63 percent nationally; in Lake County, it was 74.33 percent. In 2012, we can match this figure or do better, even if voter registration is down due to foreclosures.

In Lake County, a voter-registration grace period extends to Nov. 3 — Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- at Central Permit Facility in Libertyville. Early voting ends November 3.

If you are a U.S. citizen, a resident of Lake County, and are age 18 or older on Nov. 3, 2012, you can be registered and vote. This election matters.
