Lombard advises of new state regulation for obtaining roofing permits

LOMBARD, Illinois—The State of Illinois has mandated all persons applying for roofing permits to show a state issued ID when listing a licensed roofer on the permit application. This new Illinois law is in response to Illinois licensed roofers asking for something to be done about people placing the licensed roofers name on the permit application, but hiring non-licensed roofers to do the work. The requirement for keeping a copy of the State ID in the permit file will make prosecution of such violations much easier. Lombard is mandated to enforce this new law, but the Lombard Building Division still will issue roofing permits as an “Express Permit” allowing applicants to obtain the permit in about 10 minutes.

The Lombard Building Division's Building Official Keith Steiskal offers the following tips for hiring a contractor:

1. Get at least three bids for any major work.

2. Ask for references who are local that you can talk with.

3. Check the Better Business Bureaus web site to see if the contractor has any unresolved complaints.

4. Ask for a copy of all licenses and insurance the contractor has.

5. Watch out for possible signs of trouble such us unmarked work vehicles, out of state plates, pressure to sign right now, a too good to be true price, request for cash now, and contractors that state you should skip the permit to save money. “A permit is your best and cheapest way to ensure you are getting what you paid for, the job meets code, and to ensure there is a record of the work being done legally,” stated Steiskal.
