Elk Grove furnace fire at plant hurts 1
Oil squirting out of a broken pipe ignited a furnace fire at an Elk Grove Village manufacturing plant Friday, authorities said.
A line worker in the center of the processing area at Chem Plate Industries, 1800 Touhy Avenue, was working near the open flame of a furnace when the nearby pipe broke about 10 a.m., leading to flames and smoke, according to Lt. Michael Sharp of the Elk Grove Fire Department.
“It’s one little machine, but (smoke) filled up the whole building,” Sharp said.
About 20 employees evacuated safely. The line worker suffered a minor hand burn, but no other injuries were reported, Sharp said.
The plant was closed the rest of the day for cleanup.
