Where to find serious scares in the suburbs

It's that time again — time to let ourselves be scared witless inside haunted houses all over the suburbs.

Here's a list of some of the bigger and better-known haunted houses that will be open for business in the area through Halloween. Dates and hours may change, and some might not be suitable for children. So check ahead and have a frightful time!

Addison

DISTURBIA, Torments of Fear, 880 W. Lake St. (in the golf dome). Opens at 7 p.m. Oct. 19-21 and 23-31. (Closes at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, 11 p.m. all other days.) Kids Day held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. Regular tickets $20, $30, and Kids Day tickets $10. Go to disturbiatof.com.

Aurora

• Basement of the Dead, 42 W. New York St. Opens at 7 p.m. Oct. 19-21, 25-28 and 30-31. (Closes at 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 10 p.m. other days.) Tickets $25, $35. Call (630) 896-2466 or go to 42fear.com.

Batavia

Haunted Quarry, 400 S. Water St. (Hall Quarry Beach). Open from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20 and 26-27. A version for children will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. Tickets for the regular version cost $8, and $5 for the children's version. Go to bataviaparks.org.

East Dundee

Glendale Heights

Six Flags Fright Fest, 1 Great America Parkway. Open from 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 19 and 26; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 20 and 27; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 21 and 28; and 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. Hawthorn Woods

Lombard

No Rest for the Wicked, 356 Yorktown Shopping Center. Open at 7:30 p.m. every night through Halloween, except for Monday, Oct. 22. (Closes at midnight Fridays and Saturdays, 10:30 p.m. other days.) Kids matinee open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Tickets cost $10 adults, $5 children 9 and younger. Kids matinee free, but a donation of nonperishable food items appreciated.
