North Central College to feature artwork by military veterans
Artwork by military veterans will be featured in the exhibit “In War,” opening this month at North Central College in Naperville.
The free exhibit opens Friday, Nov. 16, and continues through Jan. 6 in the college’s Schoenherr Gallery at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. A reception with artists will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The exhibit is sponsored by JP Morgan and the College’s Yellow Ribbon Program.
“In War” is a collection of mixed media artwork highlighting various aspects of life in and out of the military. Participating artists are Drew Cameron of San Francisco; Thomas Dang of Glendale, Calif.; Michael Dooley of Naperville; Iris Feliciano of Chicago; Aaron Hughes of Chicago; Giuseppe Pellicano of Naperville; Erica Slone of Columbus, Ohio; and Ehren Tool of Berkeley, Calif.
All eight are members of the Warrior Art Group, which was created to establish a forum for veterans, active-duty military members and their spouses to showcase original artworks in any form or medium. The exhibit is running in conjunction with “In War,” a series of events presented by the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago. Visit warriorartgroup.com to learn more.
Dooley is an 82nd Airborne veteran, Bronze Star recipient and 2012 graduate of North Central College. Pellicano is an Army veteran, 2012 graduate of North Central College and a member of SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society.
North Central College is a 2013 Military Friendly School, a designation by G.I. Jobs magazine that honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. Among its military friendly initiatives, North Central College provides a veteran services program funded by an Aurora Foundation grant that enables the college to designate student-veteran peer leaders who help build camaraderie among veterans and help the college understand and serve their needs.
