Endorsement: Russell over Martinez for Kane coroner
The race for Kane County coroner presents voters a very interesting choice between a candidate with a background in homicide investigation and one with a background in private business working at death scenes. As it turns out in this case, homicide investigation — and Republican L. Robert Russell of South Elgin — is the clear choice. A sergeant in the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office with more than 20 years of police experience and Illinois certification as a lead homicide investigator, Russell has prepared himself well to assume the coroner’s duties. He has detailed understanding of the duties of the office and the management experience to provide astute leadership in a difficult time of transition and controversy. Democrat Tao Martinez of North Aurora, president and founder of a company that cleans up death scenes, has worked hard to prepare himself for a coroner’s role, and his clear sensitivity and scientific training speak well for him. But Russell’s extensive training and more-direct experience are well suited to this job, and he demonstrates an impressive commitment to rebuilding a responsive and professional office. Russell is endorsed.
