Volunteers Needed to Remove Invasive Species from Bike Paths

The Village of Lombard recognizes the importance of these paths to its residents and the nuisance posed by seeds that are spread by birds into private properties. Thus, about 150 volunteers started to remove these invasive species last April and additional work days will be needed for the foreseeable future. DuPage County owns both paths and has issued a permit for this work.

The next work day will be on Saturday, November 10 from 9 a.m.- noon. Volunteers will work in groups under guidance of two landscape architects from the Village’s Environmental Concerns Committee who will provide training and safety oversight. Volunteers are asked to provide their own gloves, safety glasses, handsaws, loppers and store-bought herbicide. Brush that is smaller than two inches in diameter will be removed and dragged to the nearest cross street. Village crews will chip the brush on the following Monday. Larger brush will be “girdled” (cut around the base) and left standing.

Herbicide will then be applied to each stump.

To register as a volunteer or for more information, contact Lombard Public Works at (630) 620-5740 or visit www.villageoflombard.org.
