Schaumburg police are still searching for a man who committed an armed robbery Friday afternoon at a shopping center, officials said. A man with a handgun entered a store, displayed a gun and demanded cash. An employee handed over an undisclosed amount of money, and the man fled on a bicycle. Full story.

Family of domestic terrorism suspect looks for answers

An Elk Grove Village family is looking for answers after 23-year-old Gregory Weiler was arraigned on domestic terrorism charges in Oklahoma yesterday. Federal charges could be coming. “We’re focusing on going down to Oklahoma as soon as possible so that we can get more answers,” Weiler’s cousin, Johnny Meyers, said. “Greg is responsible for his actions, but we still care about him. He’s not a monster.” Weiler is being held without bail at the Ottawa County jail in Miami, Okla., after police there found the makings for dozens of Molotov cocktails and plans to firebomb nearly 50 area churches, according to an affidavit filed by District Attorney Eddie Wyant. Schaumburg police chief facing internal investigation

Schaumburg officials have restarted an internal investigation into a complaint against Police Chief Brian Howerton filed by his ex-girlfriend, Dawn Davis of Schaumburg, who claims Howerton exhibited harassing and intimidating behavior toward her, before and after they were dating. The complaint filed is not of a criminal nature. In an interview with CBS 2 broadcast last night, Davis said she was fired from her job at a home health care agency by her boss because of constant, disruptive calls from Howerton on her work phone. Davis told Zekman that when she tried to ignore the calls, Howerton became infuriated and made death threats to her. Howerton said he could not comment and remains on the job. Full story.

Addison student lied about school intruder, police say

Police say a student at Indian Trail Junior High School in Addison has admitted she lied about being restrained by an intruder — a report that prompted authorities to lock down the building for three hours Friday as worried parents gathered outside. “At no time was the security at Indian Trail Junior High School breached,” said Addison Police Director Bill Hayden. Naperville city website hacked

The Naperville website remains down after a successful hacking attack last week, but officials say public safety and personal financial information has not been compromised. The website was breached last Tuesday, but City Manager Doug Krieger said last night the city’s police and information technology departments are investigating the breach as a crime, leading to the delay in bringing the system back up. Elmhurst to pay record $4.16 million in personal injury suit

A DuPage County jury has found that the city is liable in the Nov. 12, 2009, accident in which an outside worker was hurt. The man was injured when a forklift platform fell from 16 feet in the air, reportedly injuring the man’s leg and back. Lawyers said the verdict is a DuPage County record for a nonmedical malpractice personal injury verdict for a single plaintiff. Full story.

Walsh, Duckworth clash on immigration

The two candidates for the 8th Congressional District disagree on many issues, not the least of which is immigration. Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh of McHenry objects to “any kind” of amnesty for immigrants, while Democratic opponent Tammy Duckworth of Hoffman Estates supports President Obama’s recent directive to halt the deportation of younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. Construction continues on Pingree Road between Cog Circle and Grandview Drive in Crystal Lake. The roadway is scheduled to be closed until mid-October and people are urged to use IL-31 between US-14 and Crystal Lake Avenue for a detour. More traffic.

Bears’ Marshall on pace for record season

After a standout performance against Jacksonville on Sunday, Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall is on pace for a record-breaking season. Marshall already has 35 receptions for 496 yards, putting him on pace for 112 catches and 1,587 yards, both of which would be team records. “We target him a lot,” coach Lovie Smith said. “That’s why we brought him here, and he’s stepped up to the plate.” Full story.

New leader for Bulls bench

With Bulls preseason play set to get under way today, the big question is how successful the team can be from the bench, especially after major turnover of players in the past year. The one constant is Taj Gibson, the fourth-year power forward who faces restricted free agency next summer if he doesn’t sign an extension by Oct. 31. “I’ve been very encouraged by the way this unit’s working,” coach Tom Thibodeau said after yesterday’s practice at the United Center. “Taj is a big part of that unit, so he’s more or less the leader.” Full story.
