Aid society focus of ‘Civil War Saturday’

SPRINGFIELD — Visitors attending the “Civil War Saturdays” program this week at the Old State Capitol in Springfield can help make supplies like those that went to aid Union troops.

The theme of the Saturday afternoon program is “Antietam Aftermath: Appeal for Assistance.” It will focus on the role of the Soldiers’ Aid Society. That group of women met at the Capitol to make and collect supplies to send to Union troops.

There will be four stations where participants can help make supplies, including bandages.

The society knitted and sewed for the war effort. Members also sought food and clothing from the community to be sent to sick and wounded soldiers who were recovering at hospitals like the one at Camp Butler in Springfield.
