Day 3 gets off to unusual start as European star nearly late for tee time
The third and final day of the 39th Ryder Cup got off to a bizarre start at Medinah this morning when Europe’s top player, Rory McIlroy, nearly missed his tee time.
Early reports indicated McIlroy, who arrived at the course with only about 10 minutes to spare thanks to a police escort, was confused over the time zone, believing he was to tee off at 12:25 p.m., instead of 11:25 a.m.
Had he arrived with less than five minutes before his tee time, he would have been penalized a hole.
The U.S. team is holding a 10-6 lead heading into today’s 12 singles matches. They need 14.5 points to bring the cup back to American soil. Europe needs 14 points to keep retain the prize they’ve claimed four of the last five competitions.
