Group honors free throw winner at anniversary dinner

On Aug. 24, the Elgin Knights of Columbus held its 110th anniversary dinner dance at The Hickory Stick banquet hall at the Highlands Golf Club of Elgin.
The Knights of Columbus also honored Daniel Leitner, who won the international division for boys ages 12 to 15, in the Knights of Columbus annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest.
In 1902, St. Mary’s Church in Elgin was the founding parish of the Elgin Knights. At this time the Elgin council of Knights was to be the No. 654 council in the entire United States. The first council was started in New Haven, Ct., by the Rev. Michael J. McGivney. In 1902, the Elgin Council’s first Grand Knight leader was Lawrence Crane of Elgin.
In 1992, the Elgin Knights of Columbus was renamed the Monsignor Henry Schryer Council in honor Rev. Monsignor Henry Schryer who served as pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elgin from 1957 to 1983. Monsignor Schryer died in 1992.
