Youth and Family Counseling of Libertyville marks 50 years of service

Libertyville Mayor Terry Weppler recently proclaimed a special day in recognition of Youth and Family Counseling in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding.

The private, not-for-profit social service agency also is celebrating with a gala event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Ivanhoe Club. Carol Piccolo, who is retiring from the board of directors after 20 years, also will be honored.

Tickets are $150 per person. For details, call (847) 367-5991, ext. 30.

YFC was incorporated Sept. 10, 1962. Founded by a local chapter of the American Association of University Women, the private, nonprofit social service agency provides a safe, confidential environment for clients seeking help.

It is guided by a volunteer board of directors, Executive Director Janelle Miller Moravek and Jim Shackelford, director of clinical services.

YFC provides affordable counseling on a sliding fee scale for clients who are uninsured or underinsured. Its counselors provide more than 7,000 counseling sessions each year for clients seeking help with depression, anxiety, abuse, trauma, grief and loss, family relationships, divorce, substance abuse, LGBT issues and stressful life events.

Forty percent of YFC clients live at or below the poverty line, while one-third are children or teens. Fully half of YFC clients must make use of the sliding fee scale in order to afford counseling.

YFC was the first to offer a parent support group (Family Circle) in the 1980s. It also was one the first social service agencies to reach out to the Hispanic community through Aprendiendo Jugando and the Bilingual/Bicultural Counseling Program.

Youth and Family Counseling is a private, not-for-profit social service agency offering quality and affordable mental health counseling services to help people of all ages maintain and enhance their emotional and psychological well-being.
