Giant Ryder Cup golf ball stolen from Mag Mile

A Wildwood artist who painted a giant golf ball that was on display in Chicago and was stolen over the weekend says he hopes the theft will bring attention to approximately 50 other balls, which are set to be auctioned off for charity. The 3-foot-tall ball, titled “Chicago's Best,” had been signed by Chicago native Jenny McCarthy and would have likely fetched about $5,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Full story.

Willowbrook man, 18, killed in drive-by shooting

Police continue to investigate a shooting that left an 18-year-old Willowbrook man dead Monday evening. Joshua Holmes was shot at the intersection of Honeysuckle Rose Lane and Lilac Lane during a drive-by, according to witnesses. Police said detectives are investigating leads and it appears the man was targeted. Full story.

Hoffman Estates keeps Sears Centre management

The Hoffman Estates village board decided to stick with the same marketing and management companies for the Sears Centre Arena. Less than an hour after review by the village's finance committee, the board approved a two-year extension to the existing sponsorship agreement with Front Row Marketing and a three-year extension to the existing arena management agreement with Global Spectrum, Full story.

U-46 panel's ideas could turn school day on its head

A Transformation Task Force in Elgin Area School District U-46 is discussing implementing major changes to the school district such as introducing a year-round calendar, creating learning communities that team students with a consistent group of teachers at the middle school level, and pushing back high school start times from 7:40 to 8:30 a.m. The district hopes the moves will turn education in the state's second largest district on its head. Kane County committee OKs tax levy increase

A Kane County Board committee has approved a plan that would increase property taxes by about 3 percent, meaning the owner of a $250,000 home would pay about $12 more in property taxes to the county next year. The board said the money is not needed to fund government employee raises, but board members could not detail exactly what the money was needed for. Full story.

White Sox fall into 1st place tie with Tigers

The White Sox and Detroit Tigers are tied atop the AL Central with just eight games left on the schedule. The Sox fell to Cleveland 4-3 yesterday at home and over their last 19 games are batting .174 with runners in scoring position. The Sox will finish out their series with Cleveland tonight, start a four-game home series with Tampa Bay Thursday and finish the season with a three-game series in Cleveland. Full story.
