Cops: Man pulled box cutter on Arlington Heights officer

A mentally disturbed man pulled a box cutter on an Arlington Heights police officer Thursday night after the officer questioned what the man was doing outside an office building.

An officer who was conducting an unrelated check of the premises on the 600 block of East Rand Road spotted the 48-year-old man on his knees at the door of one of the suites of the building, according to police.

The man, who was seeing a therapist at the building, began yelling profanities at the officer when the officer asked him what he was doing, said Arlington Heights police Sgt. Tom Boggs.

Police said the man then pulled a box cutter from his backpack and was not complying with the officer’s instructions, Boggs said. The man did not attempt to attack the officer and no one was injured, police said.

The Arlington Heights officer called for backup and was able to arrest the man without incident.

The 48-year-old man was taken to Northwest Community Hospital for a psychological evaluation and upon his release will be charged with aggravated assault against a police officer, authorities said.
