Des Plaines hospital receives award for reducing infections

Holy Family Medical Center, a long-term acute care hospital in Des Plaines, received the 2012 Delivering Quality with Distinction Award from the Illinois Hospital Association.

The hospital’s multidisciplinary approach to reducing infections acquired in the hospital by patients who are on ventilators for a length of time significantly reduced the number of cases of the clostridium difficile infection, or CDiff.

“The CDiff rate at Holy Family went from 26.7 cases per 10,000 over the last 2 years, to 7.4 cases,” said Marti Edwards, vice president of patient care services.

The IHA received 67 applications for the award and Holy Family was one of three urban area hospitals to be recognized.
