Bolingbrook man on bond for robbery charged with taking iPhone

A Bolingbrook man who has three misdemeanor charges and a felony robbery charge pending in Rolling Meadows’ Third Municipal District court picked up another criminal charge in Hoffman Estates.

Clifton Stump, 24, of the 500 block of Norman Road, has been charged with theft after Hoffman Estates police officers say he took another man’s cellphone late last month.

Cook County Judge Jill Cerone Marisie on Monday set bail at $40,000 for Stump, who was out on bond for an August robbery in Arlington Heights, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Walsh. His bond in that case was $50,000, said Walsh, who indicated Stump’s next court appearance on that case is Sept. 25.

The complaining witness in the latest case was standing near Valley and Heritage drives in Hoffman Estates on Aug. 29 when Stump approached him and asked to use his iPhone. The man gave the phone to Stump, who walked away with it, entered an apartment building on the 500 block of Heritage Drive and locked the door, Walsh said.

The complaining witness later identified Stump in a photo lineup, she said.

In addition to the robbery charge, Stump has a misdemeanor theft charge and two charges of misdemeanor criminal trespass to property pending, Walsh said. The criminal trespass charges involve the Steeple Hill condominiums in Hoffman Estates, where authorities say Stump is not allowed.

He next appears in court on his current robbery case on Oct. 12.
