Grayslake North rallies past Prairie Ridge

Sintayehu Meyer scored twice, as Grayslake North’s boys soccer team rallied in the second half to defeat host Prairie Ridge 3-1 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover in Crystal Lake on Tuesday.

The Knights trailed 1-0 at the break, when Baruk Perez-Vera tied the score five minutes into the second half. The senior finished a shot after taking a pass from sophomore Fernando Sanchez.

“With the score tied at 1, we definitely began to show more attacking intent and more desire to put PR under a lot of pressure,” Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said.

After scoring the equalizer, Perez-Vera fed a pass to fellow senior Meyer, who slotted the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. Freshman Chris Zamora assisted on Meyer’s second goal, which all but sealed the Wolves’ fate.

Sophomore keeper Dean Jones made 4 saves for Grayslake North (3-8).

“The second half was a display of just how effective we can be when we decide to execute the entire game plan from start to finish,” DeCaluwe said. “We were more difficult to break down defensively, and we were much more threatening when we did win the ball.”

Warren 4, Wheaton Academy 0: Rafa Macias and Auner Solis each had a goal and an assist, as the Blue Devils captured the Round of 16 Pepsi Showdown game to improve to 9-1.

Sean Kirwan and Daniel Szczepanek also scored, while Nick Hathus made 1 save in earning the shutout. Nick Wegrznowicz also had an assist.

West Chicago 1, Libertyville 0: West Chicago scored the game’s only goal in the Pepsi Showdown match on a penalty kick.

Round Lake 5, Wauconda 1: Freddie Ramirez scored a goal in each half for the Panthers in the North Suburban Prairie game.

Round Lake also got goals from Mariano Narvaez, Mauricio Salgado and Fernando Sotelo. Salgado, Lorenzo Cortez, Abraham Murua and Sergio Gomez had assists.
