Colonel of Buffalo Grove now brigadier general

Colonel Richard Hayes Jr. of Buffalo Grove was promoted to the rank of brigadier general at Camp Lincoln, Springfield, on Friday. Hayes is the director of the Joint Staff of the Illinois National Guard, a post he took on in August.

Hayes was commissioned as a field artillery officer from the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Kansas in 1987. He joined the Illinois National Guard in 1989 and served overseas in 2007 and 2008 to support the Task Force in Kosovo.
