Carol Stream creek cleanup doubles
Crews will work to remove nearly 300 trees and branches from Klein and Thunderbird creeks in Carol Stream that have fallen in, primarily as the result of this summer’s violent storms.
Removing the obstructions seems to be an annual ritual in the village, though this year, there’s more to remove.
An inventory identified 296 trees or branches that need to be taken out — far more than the 142 items removed last year.
It may take the village contractor, Pessina Tree Service, four months to do the work because it’s still trying to catch-up on cleanup work from the summer’s storms. But the price — $9,275 — was right, said Jim Knudsen, the village’s director of engineering services.
The next lowest bid was $32,758.
“We got a very good price from this contractor, but unfortunately they have a big backlog because of the damage that’s been done throughout the county,” Knudsen said.
Due to the large amount of debris, village officials have labeled the obstructions high, medium and lower priority.
“Some are outright flow obstructions,” Knudsen said. “Some are potential flow obstructions that could be obstructions in future.”
Already, the village’s engineering department has done some of the work in-house with the help of DuPage County Public Works Department crews, which helped remove one of the larger trees, Knudsen said.
