Has Youk started a new Sox tradition?

The sinks inside the White Sox’ clubhouse could be filled with hair before Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Twins.

At the behest of third baseman Kevin Youkilis, many Sox players were sporting moustaches the past two games.

Not only was the timing good — late batting practice instructor Kevin Hickey wore a moustache and he was honored before Monday night’s game against the Twins — the White Sox beat Minnesota in the series opener.

“With the win, I have a feeling they’re going to be around for a while,” Paul Konerko said after Monday’s 4-2 win.

But baseball players are a superstitious lot, so don’t be surprised if the Sox’ moustache phase quickly goes down the drain following Tuesday night’s lopsided loss to the Twins.

At this time of the season, finding some sort of off-beat distraction is not a bad thing.

“This time of year you kind of have to have some goofiness to get through it,” Konerko said. “It becomes a grind. We’ve been going at this for 6½ months now from spring training.”

Youkilis came up with the moustache idea in early August. He still has time to hatch another gimmick.

“If something works, you’re not going to be against it,” Youkilis said. “I guess it’s technically a superstition.”
