Pitching matchups: The Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija (8-12) vs. Ross Detwiler (8-6) Monday at 12:05 p.m.; Chris Rusin (0-1) vs. Edwin Jackson (8-9) Tuesday at 6:05 p.m.; Chris Volstad (2-9) vs. Gio Gonzalez (17-7) Wednesday at 6:05 p.m.; Justin Germano (2-5) vs. Jordan Zimmermann (9-8) Thursday at 6:05 p.m.

At a glance: The Cubs opened the season at home against the Nationals, losing two of three, with Samardzija narrowly missing a complete-game victory in the finale. The Nationals entered Sunday with a comfortable 6½-game lead over the Braves in the NL East. Zimmerman and teammate Stephen Strasburg, who pitched Sunday, are among the league leaders in ERA, and Gonzalez was tied for the lead in wins. The Nationals led the NL in ERA (3.29) entering Sunday, and they were second in defense. The Cubs were last in many offensive categories, including hits, runs and on-base percentage. They are halfway through a stretch of 20 games in 20 days.
