Hammond adding police surveillance cameras

HAMMOND, Ind. — A northwestern Indiana city is following several larger cities in putting up police surveillance cameras in hopes that they will help fight crime.

Hammond officials plan to have the cameras at four spots around the city operating within a couple of weeks. Police Chief Brian Miller tells The Times of Munster that he looks forward to his officers being about check the cameras’ video recordings if crimes happen near those intersections.

The city’s information technology director says video from the cameras will be routed to the police dispatch center.

Many such surveillance cameras are used by police departments in cities such as Chicago and Indianapolis.

Hammond councilman Anthony Higgs says residents have been worried about shootings and other troubles around city parks.
