De Aza headed to DL
As expected, the White Sox placed center fielder Alejandro De Aza on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday (retroactive to Aug. 18).
De Aza suffered bruised left ribs while sliding into second base Friday night at Kansas City.
Fortunately for the White Sox, Dewyane Wise is going to replace De Aza while Jordan Danks fills the reserve outfielder role after coming back up from Class AAA Charlotte.
Wise opened the season with the Yankees, but he was released on July 31 after New York traded for Ichiro Suzuki.
The Sox picked up the journeyman outfielder three days later, and it’s a good thing they did.
Not only is Wise needed, he’s putting up big numbers.
“I had fun here the previous two seasons,” said Wise, who played with the White Sox in 2008-09. “It’s just all about the opportunity, getting in and getting consistent at-bats. It does mean a lot when you get in and get consistent at-bats.”
Wise, who joined the Sox on Aug. 11, had a career-high 4 hits in Tuesday night’s win over the Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field. He is 13-for-35 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI in 8 starts with the White Sox.
After being released by the Yankees, Wise was first contacted by Toronto. Before taking the offer, the White Sox called.
“You luck into getting him,” manager Robin Ventura said. “You know he’s a good player and a veteran. But the way it transpired and the way he’s playing, you fall into that one with some luck and the timing of it.”
