Aurora police: Man arrested with 42 pounds of pot

A 34-year-old Chicago man was busted with more than 42 pounds of marijuana after a traffic stop last week in Aurora, according to police and court records.

Miguel R. Lopez-Ochoa, of the 4800 block of South Hermitage Street, was pulled over during a traffic stop near Farnsworth and Sheffer roads for not signaling when changing lanes.

Ochoa was driving while his license was suspended, which triggers an automatic arrest and search of a vehicle before it is towed.

Brian Olsen, a lieutenant with the Aurora Police Department’s Special Operations Group, said police seized more than 19,000 grams of marijuana, which is more than 42 pounds.

Ochoa was charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 5,000 grams of marijuana, according to police and court records.

In court filings, Kane County prosecutors said the drugs had a street value of $191,000.

Judge Mark A. Pheanis set Ochoa’s bail at $1.9 million, meaning he must post $190,000 to be released while his case is pending. He was being held in the Kane County jail.

Kane County prosecutors also have submitted paperwork to make Ochoa prove any bond money comes from legitimate sources and not through criminal means, according to court records.

Ochoa is due in court again Aug. 29, and faces six to 30 years if convicted.
