Hoffman Estates citizen police academy orientation

An orientation meeting for the 23rd annual Hoffman Estates Citizen Police Academy will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27 in a training room at the police station, 411 W. Higgins Road.

Classes will then meet every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the station for 15 weeks, from Sept. 4 until Dec. 3. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside, attend school or work in Hoffman Estates. Applicants living in areas that do not offer a Citizen Police Academy may also be considered.

Students will get hands-on experience with real police equipment, such as squad cars, jail cells and duty gear, including firearms. Topics to be discussed include home security, SWAT operations, crime scene investigations, gangs, club drugs and a K-9 demonstration, among others.
