Succession plan means Gron is Lombard president pro tem

After the death Saturday of longtime Lombard Village President William J. “Bill” Mueller, a succession plan kicks in to fill his leadership role.

The plan calls for the most senior standing trustee, in this case, District 1 Trustee Greg Gron, to immediately assume the role of president pro tem.

Gron has been a trustee since 2005, while the next most senior trustee, Laura Fitzpatrick, was elected in 2007.

Gron will serve as president pro tem until the village board’s next meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 at village hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave.

At that meeting, the village board can follow one of three paths to choose a president to serve until the next municipal election April 9, 2013.

Ÿ Trustees can appoint an acting village president from among themselves. The acting president would retain his or her seat as a district trustee and would vote on all issues as trustees do.

Ÿ Trustees can permanently appoint one of themselves as village president until the next election. The appointed president would lose his or her seat as a district trustee and would gain all privileges as an elected village president. The appointed president only would vote to break ties and could in turn appoint someone to fill his or her vacated trustee seat.

Ÿ Trustees can do nothing and let the president pro tem fill the position until the next election. This option can be chosen if the village board is deadlocked about who to appoint as either an acting or permanent president.
