Wrong-way driver on I-94 blamed for fatal Indiana crash

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Two people have been killed on Interstate 94 in northern Indiana in a crash that state police say was caused by a driver going the wrong way on the highway.

Police say it appears a driver left a highway rest area going eastbound in the westbound lanes and crashed head-on with another vehicle about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, causing a fire that engulfed both vehicles. The drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two westbound lanes of I-94 near Michigan City were closed for several hours after the crash.

Police say the circumstances of the crash remained under investigation. The names of those killed weren’t immediately released.
