City, Blue Cross team up on detecting fraud

Chicago officials are teaming up with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois on health care fraud detection and prevention.

A task force will be made up of representatives of the city and the health insurer. Members will work to assess potential health care fraud and instances of wasteful spending.

City officials said the work could potentially recover millions of dollars in misspent money for Chicago taxpayers. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the work is important and will single out “those bad actors who are improperly exploiting the city’s resources.”

The task force will also recommend the best ways for continually improving fraud detection.

Work will begin Sept. 4.
