Lombard Fire Dept. provides medical magnet in case of emergency

LOMBARD, Illinois—The Lombard Fire Department has a program designed to help anyone in their home in the case of an emergency when they might not be able to respond. The program is known as the “medical magnet.”

The medical magnet is a magnetic pouch that is designed to be put on the refrigerator where the magnetic pouch can be easily found. Inside the pouch is a card that would be filled out by individuals with their personal information, allergies, medical conditions and any medications that are currently being taken, as well as emergency contact information.

This program replaces the former “Vial of Life” which the Fire Department had promoted in the past. The new medical magnet is simpler and easier and more visible to firefighters, emergency medical personal or police officers who may be in the residence in the case of an emergency.

“The medical magnets are an excellent way to provide our first responders with vital medical information,” said Lombard Fire Marshal Chuck Riforgiate. “They are easy to use and available at either fire station,” he added.

The medical magnets have been in use for about eight months, according to Riforgiate, and will be distributed at the upcoming Lombard Senior Fair, according to Riforgiate. The Senior Fair will be held on October 3 at the Lombard Common from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
