Fire official stress grill safety

Recently, there have been two separate fires in the village of Hoffman Estates that were caused by improper disposal of hot charcoal from barbecue grills. These fires have caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

In both cases, the fires were preventable.

The Hoffman Estates Fire Department would like to remind you that barbecue grills should be properly inspected and cleaned prior to use. In 2011, gas and charcoal grills caused 3,400 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires.

The Hoffman Estates Fire Prevention Bureau provides the following suggestions for grilling safety:

Ÿ Be sure to properly dispose of hot coals by placing them in a metal container

Ÿ Before using the grill, check the connection between the propane tank and fuel line

Ÿ Do not wear loose clothing near the grill

Ÿ Never grill indoors — carbon monoxide could be produced

Ÿ Never use gasoline to start charcoal grills

Ÿ Make sure to use lighter fluid safely and prudently

Ÿ Comply with any apartment or condominium complex rules for grills on balconies

Ÿ Keep children and pets away from grilling area
