Hoffman Estates Police Explorers seek applicants

Have you ever seen someone in a uniform directing you where to park at an event, maybe providing you and your family with helpful information when you have a question? He or she may seem too young to be a police officer, yet wears a uniform, has a professional demeanor and is knowledgeable about Hoffman Estates. That person is a Police Explorer.

The Hoffman Estates Police Department is recruiting for new Police Explorer cadets. Interested youths can pick up applications at the police department, 411 W. Higgins Road.

A Police Explorer is between 14 and 20 years old, maintains a good GPA in school, is willing to volunteer at Police Explorer events and exemplifies the highest standards of the Hoffman Estates Police Department. Police Explorers wear uniforms, participate in local events, help the public and compete in local, regional and national competitions.

The Police Explorers program is a character-building experience that will prepare young cadets for the challenges of becoming an adult, while experiencing firsthand police duties. Police Explorers also run the Junior Police Academy each year, which mentors fifth- through seventh-graders in Hoffman Estates.

The Police Explorer program is run completely on donations and fundraising. These donations are used to give each Explorer uniforms, the tools to attend training and the ability to participate in competitions.
